“Compliments of the season to you!”
This is a phrase very often used during our festive season, although I have never been explained the meaning or reason behind the phrase. I heard my father using it but never questioned where it came from. Fortunately today, we have Google and I particularly enjoyed this explanation, and hope you do too:
My start to the year has been blessed and I already had the opportunity to help a client unlock the potential of their team during a workshop last week. My prediction is that as this year unfolds the economy will pick up (read Adrian Gore’s article below), and more and more opportunities will start to appear. Make sure you and your business are ready for them and don’t say I did not warn you. You can only make use of opportunities if you are ready and prepared. If not, they will catch you off guard and disappear in thin air. Enjoy this 1minute video clip on the variations of opportunity:

Celebrate sooner in 2019!
2018 is behind us and a new dawn has appeared. I am not into new year’s resolutions, but I do enjoy the process of reflection and the power it holds. The end of last year was a reminder to reflect, but by no means is it, or should it be the only time we should consider such a process. Every quarter, as a minimum we should schedule to reflect.
Every day, we are bombarded with uncertainty from every angle. Uncertainty about our economy, our country, relationships, money, school programmes and add your own to the list. However, what we can be certain about is that our lives and our businesses currently as it stands is a reflection of us. A mirror, reflecting on the accumulation of decisions and choices we have made to date.
Therefore, our life and business is a cause and effect of all those decisions. Sure, your context does play a role and you might for example say, but I did not make the decision for the exchange rate to fall. And you are right, but you are right for you and everybody else. Some just made different choices before the exchange rate fell and others made different choices after the exchange rate fell. We all get an environment, which we did not choose, to operate in. And although it may seem that the grass is greener on the other side, one environment is not better than another. There is no such thing as the perfect environment. And although you cannot control the environment, you can choose a different one. But it will come with its own challenges of cause and effect. So the only thing you can really control is the way you think about your environment. I implore you to think about your environment, write it down (because writing stimulates thinking) and be very clear in your mind that everything around you is because of your thinking (and believes).
“The pen that writes your life story must be held in your own hand.” Irene C. Kassorla
So once you have grasped a high level of consciousness about your current state of life and business, the question is how do you go forward into the new dawn? My recommendation, through working on myself and with clients, is to apply your mind to three aspects.
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. — George Bernard Shaw”
One, apply your mind to what you want from what you are currently busy with and set the desired outcome. Set a goal, not more than 2 for the next period in your life and business and create extreme clarity about what your life and business would look like, feel like and be like if you achieved just these two things.
Two, apply your mind to what you need to stop doing. This is hard, but somewhere you need to stop certain behaviours so that you can make space for new behaviours and habits to fill your life. As Einstein explained when asked about the definition of insanity, “It is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Three, think of what new behaviours or skills you want to possess that will make you a different person. I am not talking about being a better mom, dad, coach, accountant, entrepreneur or whatever you are currently doing. What I am referring to here is what new skill do you want to develop over the next period that will enhance your life. For example, playing the piano, learning French, become a public speaker. It has to be something that you cannot currently do because you don’t have the skills to. In other words, you cannot have a goal for it to be better. You need a goal to actually be able to do it.
Create time in the new dawn of 2019 to apply your mind and to think more about the things that are important to you. Apply little focus on assumptions as they are the easy way out. Rather, use your energy to think and be creative, because every challenge (from cause and effect) has more than one solution. Don’t just assume the answer.
My wish for you in 2019 is that you can become more aware of who you are, what you can be in the world of tomorrow, and that your behaviour today sets an example for your future self and those that are watching you closely.
